Can I get legal aid for a criminal case?
I've been charged with theft. I can't afford a private attorney. What are my options?

Legal Aid South Africa provides free legal representation to accused persons who cannot afford an attorney and meet the means test. In serious criminal cases where imprisonment is likely, you have a constitutional right to legal representation at state expense. Apply at the Legal Aid office at your nearest Magistrate's Court. Bring ID and proof of income (or affidavit confirming no income).
