What we process
- Public Legal Practice Council register data on attorneys practising in South Africa.
- Account information for registered users and claimed attorney profiles.
- Enquiries submitted through an attorney's profile page. Most profiles are unclaimed - see “Enquiries to unclaimed profiles” below for what that means for where your information goes.
- Feedback answers, an optional comment, and an optional reply-to email if you respond to the short feedback prompt shown while browsing.
- Email address and consent record, if you sign up to be notified about new legal guides and answers - explicit, unbundled consent only, never a pre-ticked box.
- Technical logs and cookies as set out in our Cookie Policy.
- Search queries and how many results they returned, kept without any IP address or account link.
Why we process it
To run the directory, connect consumers with attorneys who can help them, deliver optional paid features to subscribing attorneys, secure the platform, and comply with South African law. A detailed breakdown, including the POPIA lawful basis for each category, is in our Privacy Policy.
Your rights
- Access. You can request a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
- Correction. You can ask us to correct inaccurate information.
- Deletion. You can ask us to delete your account and associated data, subject to our legal retention obligations.
- Objection. You can object to processing based on legitimate interests.
- Withdrawal of consent. You can withdraw consent for marketing or non-essential cookies at any time.

Complaints to the Regulator
If you are not satisfied with our response, you may lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator of South Africa at inforegulator.org.za. You may also contact the Regulator by email at POPIAComplaints@inforegulator.org.za.
Retention
We keep account data while your account is active and up to 36 months after closure. Enquiries are kept for 24 months. Technical logs rotate within 90 days. See the Privacy Policy for full retention terms.
Cross-border transfers
Some of our operators (hosting, email delivery, analytics) are based outside South Africa. We only use providers whose data-protection standards are comparable to POPIA.
Enquiries to unclaimed profiles
Most of the 34,471attorneys currently listed have not claimed their profile, and only a small fraction have a working email address on file. When you submit an enquiry through an attorney's profile, we ask for your explicit consent because the purpose is distinct from an ordinary “we'll pass this on” enquiry: your message is stored so it can be shown to that attorney if they later claim the profile, not delivered to them now. We do not forward, sell or otherwise disclose it to anyone in the meantime. If the attorney never claims the profile, the enquiry is simply retained for the period set out in “Retention” below.

Attorney data on the directory
Under POPIA section 14, lawfully obtained information in the public domain may be processed without express consent. The LPC register is public by design and is published to promote trust in the profession. Attorneys can claim their profile to customise the information shown beyond the public register.
