Can my landlord keep my deposit for normal wear and tear?
I rented an apartment for 3 years and recently moved out. My landlord is deducting R8,000 for faded curtains and scuff marks. Is this fair?

No — the Rental Housing Act prohibits deductions for fair wear and tear. Normal use over 3 years (faded curtains, minor scuffs) is expected and cannot be charged. Landlords can only deduct for damage beyond normal use. If no joint ingoing inspection was done, the landlord has very limited grounds to claim anything. Send a formal letter and refer to the Rental Housing Tribunal — it's free and binding.
